The history of Portsea Golf Club begins in the late 1800s when the tourist potential of the Portsea and Sorrento areas had been realised. Paddle steamer trips from Melbourne were frequent through the summer season, leading to the development of cottages, guesthouses and hotels.  The links was first opened for play from December 1924 to Easter 1925.

Environmental Values:

The Club’s land is a dedicated “Land for Wildlife” area, and one of the core values of  Portsea Golf Club is “To be responsible custodians of the Club’s iconic parcel of land, by maintaining and improving the golf course in an environmentally sustainable manner”.


The location of Portsea at the end of Mornington Peninsula is an easy 90-minute drive from Melbourne CBD, offering spectacular sweeping views over the golf course and Port Philip Bay,  and surrounded by the largest remnant of Coastal Moonah Woodlands on the Mornington Peninsula.

Mercure Portsea and Portsea Golf  Club is a fully integrated development adjoining the Point Nepean National Park.  The golf course, set amongst rolling sand dunes and coastal vegetation with spectacular views across Port Philip Bay, boasts an 18hole, 5.747 metre par 71 layout and is consistently ranked in the top 50 golf courses in Australia.  A number of recent design improvements combined with strategic bunkering, undulating fairways and slick greens, makes Portsea an enjoyable challenge for golfers of all standards.

The Region:

Portsea has been a much-loved destination for Victorians since the late 1800s. Scenic walking tracks extend through Point Nepean National Park and along the Millionaire’s Walk on the foreshore of Port Phillip Bay. Sensational views can also be enjoyed from London Bridge perched high above the ocean on the headland.   The nearby Sorrento/Queenscliff ferry provides easy access to the Bellarine Peninsula and is the gate way to the Great Ocean Road.
